Esquire is looking for pitches
Esquire is accepting narrative feature and personal essay pitches.
ALL pitches must include a grabby headline and dek that capture the essence of your story.
When writing out a feature pitch, a few paragraphs is preferred. Please always include:
A captivating lead that showcases your ability to write compelling, descriptive nonfiction
A nut graf that explains the importance of this story and why you’re pitching it now
A brief outline of your reporting plan.
They are looking for true narrative journalism, which relies on characters, scenes, and a compulsively readable narrative structure.
For essay pitches, the headline and dek should be your main focus, since there is typically less reporting required. But additional information can be included in the ‘Pitch’ field.
Before pitching, become familiar with the Esquire brand. Read a few of our features and understand our core franchises (What It Feels Like, Secret Lives of Men, Dispatches from the New Middle Age, etc). And be sure to mention if you’re targeting one of those franchises.
