Call for pitches: Visual climate migration stories from South Asia
Pay is $1,000
We’re seeking photojournalists and visual storytellers with lived experience of climate migration, or who work closely with affected communities, to explore climate-driven displacement from an insider’s point-of-view.
As higher temperatures threaten livelihoods, rising sea levels claim coastal lands, and extreme weather events destroy infrastructure, more and more people are forced to leave their homes and rebuild elsewhere. Climate change is not always the primary driver of migration “but it is increasingly part of the story,” notes the Migration Policy Institute. Yet amid polarised global debates on migration, the voices of migrants themselves are often drowned out.
What we’re looking for
We want multimedia articles exploring climate migration in South Asia, with preference for stories covering Nepal, Bangladesh, India, or Pakistan. More importantly, we want narratives that foreground the perspectives and experiences of migrants themselves.
Story requirements
Community-centered narratives that offer under-explored perspectives on climate migration
Direct community connection: You don’t need to be a climate migrant yourself, but you should have good, established relationships with communities experiencing climate-driven migration
Visuals that play a central role in the storytelling, with a strong preference for original and/or archival photos. We can accept some other formats such as short video and audio clips, illustrations and collages (or combinations). We encourage innovative approaches, but cannot support pitches involving edited videos or podcasts, or interactive presentations
Accompanying text, with a maximum of 1,000 words. This can be either a traditional article, or text integrated with the visuals.
Please note: We require submissions to be original, unpublished, and exclusive to us. As with all our content, selected work will be published on our website under Creative Commons and shared on social media.
